‘Hang on’ 은 단순히 ’기다리다’는 뜻이지만 보통 짧은 시간일 때 씁니다.

a:  “Are you ready to go yet?
b:  “No, hang on while I find my keys.
a:  “Ok, but hurry up!”

a: “준비 다 됐어?”
b: “아니, 열쇠 찾을 때까지 잠깐 기다려”
a:  “알았어, 서둘러!”

Conversation 2
Often we use it with a phrase about time to show how long we are going to be.
얼마나 시간이 걸릴지를 알릴 때 많이 쓴다

a:  “Are you coming?”
b:  “Hang on a minute, I’m not ready.

a:  “오니?”
b:  “잠깐만, 아직 준비가 안됐어.

Conversation 3
We also use it with the words “a tick” (meaning a second, like the ‘tick-tock’ of a clock) “a sec” (second) or “a mo” (moment) for something that will happen in a very short time.
“a tick”이라는 말과도 함께 쓴다. (시계추가 ‘tick-tock’ 하듯이 잠깐이라는 뜻),
그밖에도 “a sec” (second) 혹은 “a mo” (moment)도 잠시후에 일어날 일에 쓸 수 있다.

a:  “Have you finished that work yet?”
b:  “No, hang on a mo I’m just finishing now.
a:  “Good.”

a:  “그 일 이제 끝났니?”
b:  “아니, 잠깐 기다려, 곧 끝날거야.
a:  “좋았어.”

Conversation 4
Because “Hang on” is a phrasal verb we can use it in different tenses if we change the tense of ‘hang’.
“Hang on”은 구동사이기 때문에 상황에 따라 “hang”의 시제를 바꿀 수 있다.

a:  “Are you coming?”
b:  “No, I’m just hanging on (waiting) for the washing machine to finish.”
a:  “How long will it be?
b:  “Not long, just a tick.”
(present progressive)

a:  “다 됐니?”
b:  “아니, 세탁기가 끝나기를 기다리는 중이야.”
a:  “얼마나 걸릴거 같아?
b:  “얼마 안걸릴거야, 잠깐이면 돼”
(현재 진행형)

a:  “Did you see John?”
b:  “No, I hung on (waited) for as long as I could, but I had to catch a bus.
(past tense)

a:  “존 만났니?”
b:  “아니, 끝까지 기다렸는데 버스를 탔어야 했어.
